History was made November 4, 2008. Barack Obama was elected president. Political campagains aside, what made him stand out? His oratory. Leaders must be able to inspire an audience and that requires excellent speaking skills. Passion, poise, and a consistent message inspire trust. The ability to handle challenges and attacks without getting flustered conveys a sense of confidence. Delivering a message to a crowd is only part of the process. A good leader must be able to connect one-on-one. How many times have we seen a dynamic speaker who shares an exciting vision and then quickly exits the stage bypassing the handshake? Obama successfully used social media as well as making contact face-to-face.
When is comes to leadership there is a relationship between speaking and leading. To the victor belong the spoils. And to the leader belong good communication skills.

Oh, oh - "you can't lead if you can't speak". Now there is a bait line if every there was one. I will agree that that ability to speak in public is a very powerful tool that allows leaders to communicate their message and rally the troops. However, even if you can't speak well, you sure can lead well.
This is where I should probably throw in some examples: how about Mark Warner, the former governor of Virginia who gave a bad speech before one of Hilary Clinton's speeches (he's actually a very good leader), John McCain is a pretty good leader and I think that we'd all agree that he's no gift to speaking (ok, but not great), and I guess the grand prize has to go to our current president - all politics aside, he's not a very good speaker; however, he is the leader of the free world.
I think that a better way to phrase this might be to say that if you want to be a good leader, then you need to be a good communicator. That's the key. If you can do a good job of speaking in public, then all of sudden your job has become that much easier.
